On Thursday about 1 000 people crossed the English Channel by boat to reach the UK, a new record for the number of people crossing on a single day.

For the year to date over 20 000 migrants have made the crossing from the European mainland to the UK by boat, compared to about 8 000 last year.

According to the BBC about 98% of people who cross the Channel by boat apply for asylum when they make it to the UK.

Nearly 15 000 people have applied for asylum in the UK so far this year, compared to just shy of 30 000 last year.

A spokesperson for the British Home Office was quoted as saying: ‘The British public have had enough of seeing people die in the Channel while ruthless criminal gangs profit from their misery and our New Plan for Immigration will fix the broken system which encourages migrants to make this lethal journey.’
