Suretha Brits pleaded guilty to the murder of her husband, Pofadder hotel owner Leon Brits, in court this week.
Brits was found murdered in October last year, floating in a swimming pool at his hotel. He had been stabbed and strangled with a dog chain around his neck. A number of valuables had been stolen, including diamonds and Krugerrands.
Three suspects were subsequently arrested and they fingered Suretha as being the mastermind behind the killing. They claimed that she had wanted to kill her husband, as he was abusive and had also had an extramarital affair.
She was arrested in March and entered a plea of guilty this week. Suretha was sentenced to an effective 25 years behind bars, having been found guilty of murder, for which she will serve a quarter of a century, and was given fifteen years for aggravated robbery. She will serve the latter sentence concurrently with her murder sentence.
