The DA’s candidates for mayor and speaker have been elected unopposed in Tshwane.

Randall Williams will continue as the capital’s mayor, with Katlego Mathebe continuing in the post of speaker.

This outcome means that each of Gauteng’s three metros will have DA mayors, with Mpho Phalatse and Tania Campbell having been elected earlier as the mayors of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni respectively.

A fourth DA mayor was elected in another Gauteng municipality, with Tyrone Gray becoming the head of Mogale City, in the west of the province.

The ANC was turfed out in a number of other councils across the country. In the Free State the party lost control of Maluti-a-Phofung (Harrismith). The MAP16 movement, formed by former ANC councillors, will now govern the municipality, with the support of six other parties.

In Lekwa (Standerton) another community group, the Lekwa Community Forum, will provide the mayor, thanks to support from the EFF.

In KwaZulu-Natal the ANC was also booted out of two important municipalities. In Newcastle and in uMhlathuze (Richards Bay) the IFP will govern with the help of smaller parties.
