Tom Thabane, the former Prime Minister of Lesotho, has been charged with the murder of his ex-wife.

Thabane’s current wife, Maesaiah, was already charged with the same crime last year.

Thabane’s former wife, Lipolelo Thabane, was murdered in 2017. She was shot dead by unknown gunmen two days before Thabane’s inauguration as the mountain kingdom’s head-of-government.

Thabane stepped down as Prime Minister last year, after it was revealed he was a suspect in Lipolelo’s murder.

Thabane and Lipolelo had been estranged since 2012. Thabane and Maesaiah married two months after Lipolelo’s murder. They have both denied involvement in the killing.

The 82-year-old Thabane has had a colourful political career, fleeing to South Africa in 2014 after he claimed that political opponents wanted to kill him. He returned to Lesotho later that same year.

He served two terms as Prime Minister, from 2012 to 2015 and again from 2017 to 2020.
