Despite a Tory rebellion the British Parliament voted on Tuesday to implement Covid passes in England.

Ninety-nine MPs from the governing Conservative Party voted against the government’s proposal to bring in the measure but was helped over the line by support from opposition parties, notably Labour.

At the same time votes were passed which make vaccinations mandatory for employees of the NHS in England. In addition, people in England will have to continue to wear masks in certain indoor settings.

People who are over 18 will now have to prove they have been vaccinated against Covid-19 or have had a negative test within the previous 48 hours. According to the BBC the rules ‘apply to nightclubs, indoor unseated venues with more than 500 people, unseated outdoor venues with more than 4,000 people, and any venue with more than 10,000 people’.

Similar rules have already been implemented in the rest of the United Kingdom.

The revolt by MPs from the governing party have led to speculation that Prime Minister Boris Johnson could face a leadership challenge next year.
