At least 17 people have been killed in western Ghana after a truck carrying explosives to a gold mine in western Ghana collided with a motorcycle and set off the explosives.

“A total of 17 people have unfortunately been confirmed dead, and 59 injured people have been rescued,” according to Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.

Videos taken of the aftermath show enormous damage to surrounding buildings with many reduced to rubble by the powerful blast.

A local official said that 500 buildings were destroyed in the blast and that rescue efforts are continuing.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is investigating the cause of the blast.
