Bongani Baloyi, the former mayor of Midvaal in Gauteng, announced yesterday that he was joining ActionSA.
Baloyi had served as Midvaal mayor on a DA ticket but announced in December last year that he was leaving the party, triggering much speculation about his political future.
He had served as the mayor of Midvaal from 2013 until November 2021. Midvaal is the only municipality in Gauteng which is governed outright by the DA. It is also regularly in the top echelon of South African municipalities on various rankings.
News24 quoted Baloyi as saying: ‘My joining ActionSA is not out of anger, but actually because of hope that lies ahead of me. I believe this is a realignment of our politics. We have one enemy, and that is the African National Congress.’
ActionSA was founded by Herman Mashaba, who had been a DA mayor of Johannesburg. John Moodey, the DA’s former leader in Gauteng, is also a prominent ActionSA official.
