The border between Uganda and Rwanda is to be reopened, having been closed in 2019 due to tensions between the two countries.

The main border post at Gatuna/Katuna was closed and the movement of people and goods was barred. At the other two primary border posts at Cyanika and Kagitumba only goods were allowed across but not people.

The closures came after tensions between the two countries. Although Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, and Paul Kagame, his Rwandan counterpart, had been comrades in various bush wars to overthrow governments in their two countries, relations soured once each came to power.

Rwanda also accused Kampala of supporting rebel groups seeking to overthrow Kagame while Uganda claimed that Rwandan agents were illegally spying in Uganda.

The decision to reopen the border came after high-level meetings last week between government officials on each side (including Museveni’s son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba) with the border set to open tomorrow.

The border closure has also significantly disrupted trade in the region.
