Keegan Petersen, the Proteas batter who made an impression in the recent Test series against India, has been ruled out of the upcoming series in New Zealand, because of Covid.

Petersen, playing in his only second Test series, was the top run getter on either side in the South Africa-India series, scoring 276 runs at 46, and impressed observers with his assured batting at No 3.

However, after having tested positive for Covid he has been ruled out of the two-Test series against New Zealand, which starts later this month. According to a statement by Cricket South Africa Petersen is asymptomatic and in good health.

Zubayr Hamza, who last played a Test in 2020 versus England, will be Petersen’s replacement in the squad.

Kane Williamson, New Zealand’s captain and leading batter, has also been ruled out of the series.

New Zealand has never won a Test series against South Africa, but will fancy their chances against a Proteas side which is in somewhat of a rebuilding phase.
