A Zambian woman is in court for allegedly defaming President Hakainde Hichilema.

According to the BBC the woman had accused Hichilema of being involved in ‘nefarious dark rituals’ (presumably witchcraft).

If convicted the woman could face up to three years in jail.

In January a local politician was interrogated under a defamation law after advising Hichilema to ‘put your buttocks down,’ a Zambian phrase which advises a person to take it easy.

Hichilema has been criticised for allowing the defamation case to go ahead, after he’d pledged to strike ‘archaic’ laws off the statute books in the run-up to a presidential election last year, which he won.
