On Thursday, Turkey and Ukraine signed a free-trade deal in Kiev after a decade of negotiations between the two countries. The deal was signed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The deal seeks to achieve $10 billion in bilateral trade volumes. In 2021 trade between the two countries had jumped by 59%.

Relations between Turkey and Ukraine have been on the rise for sometime as Turkey has vied for regional influence over the Middle East and Black Sea with Russia especially in Syria, Libya, and Azerbaijan.

In 2018 Turkey sold some of its converted combat drones to Ukraine, which the Ukrainians used in combat with Russian-backed separatists in the Donbas region.

With tensions still high between Russia and Ukraine, it is likely that Ukraine may seek further co-operation with Turkey in the coming years.
