President Joe Biden announced this week that he would be selecting appellate judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as his nominee to replace retiring judge, Justice Stephen Breyer, on the Supreme Court. Breyer, at 84, is the oldest sitting Supreme Court.

In a statement President Biden described his nominee as a candidate with “exceptional credentials, unimpeachable character and unwavering dedication to the rule of law,”.

The Biden administration made clear in the lead up to the announcement that they would only consider nominating a black female judge to fill the position on the court, a claim which has been heavily criticized by Republicans for being a race-based decision and discrimination against other qualified candidates.

Democracts are expected to fast track the Senate hearing to confirm Judge Jackson.
