A court has confirmed that Misuzulu kaZwelithini can be crowned as the new King of the Zulus, succeeding his late father, Goodwill Zwelithini, who died in March last year due to a Covid-related illness.

This follows a court challenge that had attempted to prevent his coronation.

Misuzulu had been appointed as heir by Queen Mantfombi Dlamini, Goodwill’s ‘Great Wife,’ and Misuzulu’s mother, and who was serving as regent following Zwelithini’s death. She was also a member of the Swazi royal family. Although Misuzulu had not been named formally as heir he was named in Queen Mantfombi’s will. She died in April 2021, only a few weeks after her husband.

Two of Zwelithini’s daughters headed to court to prevent Misuzulu’s coronation as king, claiming his accession would prejudice them as members of the Zulu royal family, but the High Court has now rejected this application and said that the coronation can go ahead.
