Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, is leading in polls ahead of that country’s first-round Presidential election, scheduled to be held on Sunday.

If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two candidates will advance to a run-off, scheduled for 24 April.

In a crowded field of 12 candidates, Macron was the first choice of just over a quarter of respondents.

Marine le Pen, the head of the right-wing National Rally (formerly the National Front), is second with 21%.

Jean-Luc Melenchon, of the left-wing La France Insoumise parliamentary group had the support of 15.5% of respondents, with the controversial Eric Zemmour receiving the support of 11% of those polled.

Polling indicated that in a run-off between Macron and Le Pen, Macron would most likely win, narrowly beating his opponent with 53% of the vote to Le Pen’s 47%.

This gap has narrowed significantly, with previous polls showing that Macron had the support of over 60% of respondents.

Elections for the French National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament, are due to be held in early June.
