Emmanuel Macron has won re-election in the second round of the Presidential election.

Macron won 58.5% of the vote, with his right-wing opponent, Marine le Pen, managing 41.5%.

This was a rematch of the previous Presidential election, when the same two faced off against each other. However, in that election Macron’s victory was far more comfortable, with his winning nearly two thirds of the vote.

The second-round turnout was the lowest recorded since the 1969 Presidential election and was the first time since 2002 that an incumbent won re-election.

In his victory speech, Macron said: ‘An answer must be found to the anger and disagreements that led many of our compatriots to vote for the extreme right. It will be my responsibility and that of those around me.’

France will go to the polls again in June to elect its legislature.
