Liz Truss, the British foreign secretary, is the favourite to take over from Boris Johnson as the leader of the Conservative Party, and may therefore become the next British Prime Minister.

She and Rishi Sunak, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, are the only two candidates that remain in the race to succeed Johnson, after they came out on top after five rounds of voting by Tory MPs.

The vote will now go to the ordinary members of the Conservative Party, who will elect the next leader.

The two candidates will also now participate in twelve public hustings which will be held around the United Kingdom.

The final vote from party members is expected by about 5 September.

According to YouGov, a polling firm, Truss currently has the support of 62% of the members of the party, compared to only 38% for Sunak. Truss is clearly the favourite, but much could change over the next few months.

If Truss wins, she will become the third female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May, while a Sunak victory would make him the first Prime Minister from an ethnic minority.
