Slovenia has elected a woman for the first time to serve as President.

Natasa Pirc Musar, a journalist and lawyer running as an independent, was elected with 54% of the vote, beating Anze Logar, a former foreign minister.

This follows a first round, which was held last month. Logar had been leading in the first round, winning 34% of the vote, while Pirc Musar had secured 27%.

The position of President is largely ceremonial in Slovenia.

Ms Pirc Musar has links to former US First Lady, Melania Trump. Pirc Musar had acted as a lawyer for Mrs Trump, protecting her interests in Slovenia where she was born. In 2016 Pirc Musar filed a lawsuit on behalf of Mrs Trump against a Slovenian magazine which claimed that Mrs Trump had worked as an escort while trying to get her modelling career off the ground. An out-of-court settlement was reached.
