Initial results from elections held in Equatorial Guinea show that long-time President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema, has secured over 99% of the vote.

Obiang came to power in 1979 when he overthrew his uncle, Francisco Macias Nguema, in a violent coup. His uncle was killed by firing squad.

Obiang is the second-longest, non-royal leader in the world, with Paul Biya of Cameroon being the only leader who has served for longer.

Two other candidates were running for President, but failed to make an impact.

Obiang will be pleased with this result as in the previous election, he only managed 93% of the vote.
