Aung San Suu Kyi, the Myanmar politician, has had seven years added on to her sentence and will now be detained for a total of 33 years.

She has been under house arrest since February 2021 when her government was ousted in a military coup. She has been in and out of the courts since then and faces 19 charges, which human rights bodies say are a sham. The various trials she has been part of have also been held behind closed doors, with the public and media barred.

It is estimated that about 13 000 people are being held in Myanmar as political prisoners.
