King Charles III will not feature on Australia’s new $5 note. Instead, the note will include designs which celebrate the culture of indigenous Australians.

The late Queen Elizabeth II currently features on the $5 note but there will be no monarch on the new design.

The death of the Queen last year also reignited a debate around the monarchy in Australia, with some in the country pushing for it to drop the monarchy and become a republic.

The Australian central bank said in a statement: ‘The Bank will consult with First Australians in designing the $5 banknote. The new banknote will take a number of years to be designed and printed.’

Lidia Thorpe, an indigenous Australian and a member of the Australian senate, said on Twitter: ‘This is a massive win for the grassroots, First Nations people who have been fighting to decolonise this country.’
