Zesco, the Zambian electricity supply company, announced this week that there would be no more loadshedding and consumers would enjoy 24 hours a day of electricity.

Zambians had recently been affected by power cuts of between four and twelve hours, but these would now be a thing of the past.

According to the MD of Zesco, Victor Mapani, this was because a number of power stations had been upgraded. This included revamping power stations at Victoria Falls and Lake Kariba.

The power cuts had been caused by low water levels in Lake Kariba. That meant that the hydroelectric plant at the dam could not function at full capacity.

Back home, President Cyril Ramaphosa said he would declare a state of disaster to deal with the South African energy crisis.
