According to health authorities in Malawi the death toll from a recent cholera outbreak reached 1 300 people this week.
On Wednesday, Malawi passed 40 000 cases of cholera since the beginning of the outbreak which began in March 2022.
Whilst Malawi regularly suffers from outbreaks of cholera there are usually only around 100 deaths from the disease a year, with this outbreak being the deadliest in the country’s recorded history.
South Africa has recently confirmed two imported cases of cholera from Malawi.
