According to Internet watchdog NetBlocks, access to social media, such as Facebook and TikTok was blocked by the Ethiopian government in the midst of a violent split in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

At least 30 people have been killed in protests both in support of and against the split.

The Ethiopian government has blocked social media before, such as in 2020 when access was restricted in the Oromiya region during protests.

Ethiopian authorities have banned further protests, but some factions of the church have accused the government of interfering in church affairs and have called on protests to go ahead despite the ban.
