There has been an outbreak of the deadly Marburg virus in Central Africa, with a number of cases confirmed in Equatorial Guinea.

The Marburg virus causes a haemorrhagic fever, similar to that caused by Ebola. Outbreaks of the Marburg virus have seen fatality rates of between 24% and 88%.

Nine people have died of the disease in Equatorial Guinea so far, with two more suspected cases detected in Cameroon, which lies to Equatorial Guinea’s north.
