The Tanzanian government has banned a popular series of children’s books from being used in schools – because they ‘violate traditions and customs’.

The government said that the ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ series promoted LGBTQ rights.

Adolf Mkenda, the minister of education, was quoted as saying: ‘This is the first list, after we checked and verified that these books violate traditions and customs. The content in them are not good for the upbringing of Tanzanians. The review is ongoing.’

Mkenda also encouraged parents to search their children’s schoolbags to ensure that the books were not present.

Schools found to be using the books could have their registration revoked and face legal consequences.
