According to official results, Bola Tinubu has been elected as the new President of Nigeria.

Tinubu, the candidate of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) won 36%, followed by Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who won 29.1%.

Peter Obi, the nominee of the Labour Party and former member of the PDP, won a quarter of the vote.

Only one other candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party, won more than 5% of the vote.  Kwankwaso managed to win 6%.

Opposition parties rejected the result and demanded a rerun.

In his acceptance speech Tinubu said: ‘I take this opportunity to appeal to my fellow contestants to let us team up together. It is the only nation we have. It is one country and we must build it together.’
