Pictures of popular flowers, such as roses, tulips, nasturtiums and sunflowers, were chosen for the first set of British stamps to bear the head of King Charles to reflect the fact that the monarch is a ‘passionate gardener’.

The BBC reports that the first special stamps bearing the head of King Charles will likely only start appearing next month, whenstocks run out of existing stamps showing the late Queen’s head.

The new design replaces the one featuring Queen Elizabeth’s head, used continuously on commemorative stamps since 1968. It had appeared on stamps marking hundreds of events and themes, from Concorde to Christmas and Doctor Who to Thomas the Tank Engine.

According to the BBC, the Royal Mail’sDavid Gold said using pictures of flowers for the new landmark set of stamps reflected the fact that the King was a ‘passionate gardener’.
