The United Nations (UN) has warned that the world faces a water crisis due to what it calls ‘vampiric’ consumption.

The UN said that on current trends, up to a quarter of the world’s population would have no access to safe or clean water.

This comes out of a report released by the global body, ahead of a conference on global water supply, which started this week.

Richard Connor, one of the primary authors of the report, said that if water usage habits did not change, up to half of the world’s population would not have access to sanitation and between 20 and 25% of the globe’s population would have no access to safe drinking water.

One of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals is ensuring that all of the world’s population has access to sanitation and clean water by 2030. For this goal to be achieved, current levels of investment must be tripled, the UN said.
