The United Nations (UN) has warned that democracy in Botswana is under threat.

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR), conducted by the UN, of the country said that there were concerns over the rule of law, with the victimization of former Botswana President, Ian Khama, being raised as an issue, among others.

The UPR was conducted for Botswana following concerns over democratic backsliding in the country.

The US State Department also identified human rights abuses in the country in its latest Botswana Country Report highlighting the ‘arbitrary arrest of opposition political figures, and abuses committed by members of the security forces, including the dispersal of peaceful protests.’
