Ghana approved a new malaria vaccine for use in young children this week in efforts to cut down on the number of children who die from the disease.

The vaccine from the University of Oxford is currently in late-stage trials which have not been completed yet, however early results suggest the vaccine is far more effective than the only other available malaria vaccine.

Early studies suggest that the new vaccine has been up to 80% effective.

Over 600 000 people died from malaria in 2021, many of them children. Some estimates suggest malaria has historically killed more people than any other single disease.
