An Indian air travel record was broken on Sunday when 456 082 people took flights in the country. Nearly 3 000 flights took off that day.

The record comes as India is experiencing both a travel boom in the wake of Covid and as the country continues to see its economy grow rapidly, which boosts sectors such as air travel.

It is estimated that about 37.5 million people flew on domestic flights in India in the first quarter of the year, an increase of just over 50% compared to the same period last year.

Despite India’s growth in air travel, the country’s airline industry faces a number of issues, including rising costs due to a relatively weak currency and technical issues which have seen a number of plans grounded.

In spite of this, the latest statistics show that India continues to emerge as a significant economic and political force in the world. It recently officially overtook China as the most populous country in the world, which could be significant for the region and the globe.
