The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court announced on Thursday that four new arrest warrants had been issued following investigations into war crimes committed in Libya.

Prosecutor Karim Khan said that the warrants were ‘an important step in the rights of victims and survivors’.

Libya has been embroiled in a civil war since a revolt against former dictator Gaddafi toppled him in 2011.

The first phase of the war saw the defeat of Gaddafi, but the country collapsed into a second phase of the civil war in 2014 when the new government failed to stabilise the country. Since then, two rival governments have emerged, one based in Tobruk and the other in Tripoli.

Russia has supported the Tobruk government, whilst Turkey has backed the Tripoli government.
