The Republic of Ireland is set to introduce health warning labels on alcohol.

According to the BBC this will make it the first country in the world to do so.

The Irish minister of health, Stephen Donnelly, signed the measures into law yesterday, but they will only come into effect in 2026.

The labels will draw attention to the health consequences of drinking alcohol and include a calorie count.

Donnelly was quoted as saying: ‘I welcome that we are the first country in the world to take this step and introduce comprehensive health labelling of alcohol products. I look forward to other countries following our example.’
