Messages on WhatsApp will soon be available for editing up to 15 minutes after being sent, the instant-messaging service has announced.

According to the BBC, the feature will made be available to WhatsApp’s 2 billion users (487 million of them in India) in the coming weeks.

This feature is already offered by competitors like Telegram and Signal.

The instant-messaging service is part of US technology giant Meta, which also owns Facebook and Instagram.

WhatsApp said in a blog post: ‘From correcting a simple misspelling to adding extra context to a message, we’re excited to bring you more control over your chats. All you need to do is long-press on a sent message and choose “Edit” from the menu for up to fifteen minutes after.’

Edited messages will be tagged as ‘edited’, but changes will not be visible to recipients.

The BBC reports that the edit function was introduced by Facebook almost a decade ago. At the time, the social media platform revealed that more than half its users accessed the site on mobile phones, which were more prone to typing errors.

On Facebook, updated posts are marked as edited. A history of the edits is also available for users to view.

Last year, Twitter announced that it was allowing paying subscribers to edit their tweets, with changes being possible for 30 minutes after posting.
