Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, has officially announced that he will be making a bid to  become the Republican Party’s nominee for US President in next year’s election.

DeSantis made the announcement on a Twitter ‘Spaces’ platform.

The beginning of the event was marred by technical glitches, and the announcement got under way 20 minutes late.

Once the event began, DeSantis emphasised his conservative credentials by pointing to his track record in Florida on issues such as education and Covid lockdowns.

‘I am running for president of the United States to lead our great American comeback,’ the BBC quoted DeSantis as saying.

DeSantis joins what is already a crowded field, with former President Donald Trump the most prominent name in the ranks of those running to secure the Republican nomination for next year’s election.
