A former police officer, wanted by international authorities for allegedly orchestrating the murder of 2000 people during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, has been arrested in South Africa.

The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals said that Fulgence Kayishema was arrested at a vineyard in Paarl last week by South African police.

According to police he had assumed a fake identity, using the name of Donatien Nibashumba.

Until his arrest the United States had offered a $2million reward reward for information leading to his capture.

Kayishema was indicted by the U.N.’s International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and charged with genocide, complicity in genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, and crimes against humanity for killings and other crimes.

The indictment alleges Kayishema, who held the rank of police inspector at the time, directly participated in the planning and execution of the massacre by acquiring petrol to burn down a church with people trapped inside.
