A man suspected of being a major financier of the Rwandan genocide has been deemed unfit to stand trial.

Felicien Kabuga, who is 88 years old, was arrested in Paris in 2020, after having been on the run since 1994.

It is alleged that he financed Hutu militias during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, when nearly a million people – mostly those belonging to the Tutsi ethnic group – were killed in the space of about three months.

Kabuga, who made his fortune in the tea trade in the 1970s, is alleged to have bought machetes for Hutu militias to use against Tutsis and Hutus who opposed the slaughter. He is also accused of having allowed a radio station he owned to broadcast anti-Tutsi propaganda.

His lawyers argued that Kabuga was suffering from dementia and was unfit to stand trial, an argument which the court agreed with.
