Australia is to ban the swastika and other symbols associated with the Nazis, such as the insignia of the notorious paramilitary group, the SS. The raised arm salute associated with the Nazis will not be banned, however.

While the symbols had been banned in various Australian states, this ban would now be a nationwide one. The decision to ban the symbols came after concerns over the rise of the far-right in Australia.

The Australian attorney general, Mark Dreyfus, said: ‘There is no place in Australia for symbols that glorify the horrors of the Holocaust. We will no longer allow people to profit from the display and sale of items which celebrate the Nazis.’

The ban will not apply to display of Nazi-related symbols for educational, artistic, journalistic, literary, or scientific purposes.
