Chris Christie, the Republican former governor of New Jersey, is officially in the running to be the next President of the United States.

Christie filed papers earlier this week, making his candidacy official.

Christie had tried to secure the Republican nomination for President in 2016 but withdrew fairly early in the primaries, and went on to endorse the eventual winner, Donald Trump.

Although Christie had been seen as a potential member of a Donald Trump cabinet, with some speculating he had been considered for Trump’s running mate, Christie eventually became a harsh critic of Trump.

At an event this week Christie described Trump as a ‘lonely, self-consumed, self-serving mirror hog’.

Christie enters a crowded field, with polling showing Trump as the most popular candidate among Republican Party supporters by some distance.
