Post will be for the first time delivered by drone in the United Kingdom.
Post will be delivered using drones in the Orkney Islands in Scotland. The service is a joint venture between the Royal Mail and a drone company, Skyports. The joint venture is called I-Port.
The drones will take post from a central location and drop it off on the various islands, where it will then be distributed by Royal Mail staff.
The service is due to be conducted on a three-month trial basis but is likely to be made permanent.
Chris Paxton, a representative of the Royal Mail was quoted as saying: ‘We are proud to be working with Skyports to deliver via drone to some of the most remote communities that we serve in the UK. Using a fully electric drone supports Royal Mail’s continued drive to reduce emissions associated with our operations, whilst connecting the island communities we deliver to.’
