Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, is to separate from his wife.
The Prime Minister’s Office released a statement saying that Trudeau and his wife, Sophie, had signed a ‘separation agreement’.
The statement said: ‘They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken and will continue to do so moving forward.’
In a joint statement, the Trudeaus said: ‘We remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build.’
The Trudeaus were married in 2005 and have three children, aged between nine and 15.
Trudeau is the second Canadian Prime Minister to announce a marital separation while in office. The first was Trudeau’s father, Pierre, who announced he was separating from his wife and Justin’s mother, Margaret, in 1977.
