Quinton de Kock, the Proteas’ opening batter and wicketkeeper, has said he will be retiring from one-day internationals (ODIs) after the upcoming World Cup, which starts in India next month.

De Kock made the announcement on Tuesday after the announcement of the South African World Cup squad.

He retired from Test cricket at the end of 2021 but will still be available for T20 internationals (T20Is).

The relationship between De Kock and the game’s governing body in South Africa, Cricket South Africa (CSA), has been increasingly fraught in recent years, and came to a head when De Kock refused to ‘take a knee’ in support of the Black Lives Matter movement before a game during the 2021 T20 World Cup.

De Kock will continue playing for various teams around the world in the various T20 leagues. This is becoming a growing problem for world cricket, with many players preferring to play in these leagues, rather than for their national teams.

While De Kock has an excellent international record in Tests and ODIs, many will see his career as being one of unfulfilled promise.
