Authorities have sealed the Libyan city of Derna to help rescuers in their desperate search for survivors after catastrophic flooding this week caused by the collapse of two nearby dams in torrential rainfall claimed the lives of at least 11 000 residents.
Some 10 000 were still listed as missing yesterday.
Resources from both of Libya’s rival governments have been rushed to the city, but significant infrastructure damage has hampered efforts to extend support to Derna.
Rescue efforts will reportedly be complicated by leftover explosives from its ongoing civil war still littering the country.
