The average global temperatures in September were the highest on record, breaking previous highs.
September 2023 was 0.9°C warmer than the average for the month measured between 1991 and 2020.
September was also 0.5°C warmer than the previous warmest September ever recorded, in 2020.
According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service C3S), based in Europe, this was the biggest jump in average temperatures, since records began in the 1940s.
Dr Samantha Burgess, the Deputy Director at C3S was quoted as saying: ‘The unprecedented temperatures for the time of year observed in September – following a record summer – have broken records by an extraordinary amount.’
Scientists believe that at least some of the rise in temperatures can be explained by the El Nino weather phenomenon.
