The DA in eThekwini has called for the dissolution of the eThekwini municipal council, given the serious challenges facing one of South Africa’s biggest municipalities.

On Wednesday the party said it would look to use the Municipal Structures Act to dissolve the council.

The municipality is currently governed by an ANC-led coalition.

The DA said eThekwini was facing a ‘historical, unabated collapse of service delivery’.

If the council is dissolved, the city’s residents will need to go to the polls again. The municipal council will have to vote, and will need a two-thirds majority to pass the motion.

The DA has also called for the dissolution of the Johannesburg municipal council.
