Gerco van Deventer, who has been held hostage by Al-Qaeda in North Africa for six years, has been freed.

Van Deventer was taken hostage in Libya in 2017 and was reportedly sold to Al-Qaeda in Mali in 2018.

His release was confirmed by the South African aid and charity organisation, Gift of the Givers, which had been negotiating his release.

Gift of the Givers said he had been released unconditionally over the weekend.

Van Deventer had been working as a paramedic when he was kidnapped.
