The rate of deforestation in the Amazon in 2023 dropped by half compared to the previous year.

This was according to the Brazilian government, which said this was also the lowest rate of deforestation recorded in five years.

Initial data showed that the area cleared was just over 5 000 sq km, a decline compared to the over 10 000 sq km cleared in 2022.

However, the area cleared is still equivalent to more than a quarter of the area of Gauteng.

Lula, the President of Brazil, in 2022 said that he would end the deforestation of the Brazilian rainforest by 2030.

About 60% of the Amazon is in Brazil and it is home to about three million different species of plants and animals and about one million indigenous people.
