A Kenyan police officer has been killed, and four people have been seriously injured by a donkey cart with an improvised explosive on the Kenyan/Somali border.

The cart was driven by a lone man, who passed over from Somalia. When he entered Kenya he was stopped so that police could inspect the cart.

The man immediately fled and the cart exploded.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Islamist group al-Shabab, which controls territory in Somalia is suspected by Kenyan authorities.

In recent years, al-Shabab attacks in Kenya have been mostly to roadside bombs. Last Monday, five police officers were wounded when their truck was hit by a roadside bomb in northern Kenya.
