There were protests in the Moroccan capital of Rabat over the weekend, over the country’s ties to Israel.

The two countries established diplomatic relations in 2020 following the establishment of the US-brokered Abraham Accords, which saw Israel normalise relations with a number of Arab countries.

Reportedly, as a sweetener to recognise Israel the United States agreed to recognise Morocco’s claims over the disputed territory of Western Sahara.

However, since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas there has been growing opposition to ties between Morocco and Israel.

Some protestors at the march were reportedly waving placards with the slogan ‘normalisation is treason’.
