Shamima Begum, a British woman who left the UK a decade ago at age 15 to join ISIS in Syria, has lost an appeal against the revocation of her citizenship.

She had lost her British citizenship in 2019, on the grounds that she posed a security risk.  The British government argued that she held citizenship of Bangladesh through her parents, and would thus not be made stateless.

However, her rights to Bangladeshi citizenship lapsed when she turned 21, and the country’s foreign minister has confirmed that she would be prosecuted and possibly executed for joining a terrorist group.

She remains in a refugee camp in Syria, from which she has been attempting to have her UK citizenship and right to return to the country reinstated.

Her lawyer said that her team would ‘not going to stop fighting until she does get justice and until she is safely back home.’
